Charismalab and Creativity...
Enough Already!
The age of abundance is upon us in the Western world, and it has arrived with a vengeance. Never before in the history of mankind has anything been more possible and almost everything more replaceable. There are now more products on our shelves, more information at our fingertips and more importantly, more choice for everyone in a position to make a choice.
In business and at home expectations are high and standards are set and met based on our culture of abundance. For some this state of affairs is a nightmare for others a gift but for all of us this means terminal competition and potential uncertainty.
What skills do we need if we hope to survive in business in this culture of abundance?
The new evolution of business will require a new type of worker who will have to be creative, progressive and independent. There is a new breed of business training being born right now to meet this need: Charismalab
The author and futurist Daniel Pink suggests that we are entering the 'Conceptual Age'. According to Pink our cultural evolution through the ages of Agricultural (farming), The Industrial (factories), The Information (Knowledge workers) has led to the need for a different kind of worker.
With more and more companies outsourcing engineering, IT and knowledge workers the race is on to find those employees who bring a new experience and a fresh exchange of ideas to the work place - creators, pattern and meaning makers who can empathise with us and our customers.
In today's competitive, volatile and insecure business environment, companies and their people need to be flexible, able to adapt and sometimes reinvent for any hope of long-term survival. Current psychological research suggests that logical, left-brain thinking could hinder flexibility and what is now required is a culture of right -brained creativity and innovation. The good news is that most of us have a brain that includes both parts. And as creativity is an innate, right -brain competency that we all possess we all hold the seeds of innovation in our hands (or heads).
Making a difference.
In a culture of abundance where material goods literally ooze from every retail pore it may at first seem an impossible task to set our selves or our products apart from the rest? Actually the reverse is true.
The more abundant products become the more likely it is that consumers will look for something rare and unique. This also applies to people. If we believe we have a variety of choices, whether choosing a partner or an employee, the more we will search for someone who engages with us on a deeper level.
Our response will be dependent on whether a person, place or thing has any meaning for us. In order to identify what is important to others we have to apply a creative approach to communication. Standard and conventional forms alone are no longer sufficient to fully engage us as the media and our access to the Internet has put most of us into overload and diminished our susceptibility to hype and spin.
Communication today, in all its forms, must include enough meaning to connect emotionally with the people we engage with. Meaning can often, more easily be communicated using storytelling techniques and utilising myth. Adapting the skills that artists and writers use to express and represent meaning can have a dramatic and positive effect on the way we communicate.
The good news is that each of us has the potential to cross the limits of our normal boundaries and begin to explore the possibility of developing multidisciplinary, communication skills.
In an age of abundance either - or - choices are no longer acceptable, rather multi- options leading to blended solutions will ensure long-term survival.
